Reverse DNS (rDNS / PTR) for VPS IPs

Reverse DNS maps an IP address back to a hostname. It is commonly checked by mail and network systems, but a PTR record alone does not guarantee mail deliverability.

Forward and reverse DNS

An A or AAAA record maps a hostname to an address. A PTR record maps an address back to a hostname. Many mail systems expect the forward and reverse names to be consistent.

Before requesting a PTR

  • Choose a fully qualified hostname you control.
  • Create the matching forward A or AAAA record where applicable.
  • Make sure the hostname resolves to the same server address before expecting forward-confirmed reverse DNS.

Check the records

Forward lookup
dig +short A host.example.com
dig +short AAAA host.example.com
Reverse lookup
dig -x 203.0.113.10 +short

Request workflow

For services that support rDNS management, use the authorised service workflow or contact support with the service ID, IP address and requested hostname. The provider controls the reverse zone for provider-assigned addresses.

Mail reputation is separate

Correct rDNS is only one part of mail-system reputation and authentication. SPF, DKIM, DMARC, server configuration, content and IP reputation can all affect delivery.
